What was the process? You Responded. We Listened.
A survey was done of community members in 2017 by Survey Experts. More than 700 people responded covering a variety of age groups and demographics including 40% who owned ag land and 59% who did not have school age children. The response rate was among the best that Survey Experts has ever had. The community showed strong support for elementary classrooms, modest support for other areas including band room, kitchen, parking lot, and elementary gym while not supporting an auditorium. This plan speaks directly to these results. 67% of respondents said to refine the plan based on feedback and ask for voter support and 72% of survey respondents asked the district to address facilities needs as soon as possible or within 1-5 years. |
A Community Process.
At the end of 2017, the district assembled the Pierz Facilities Committee to help address facility needs by planning for the future and discussing possible solutions. More than two dozen community members, staff, and school board members met in December 2017 to discuss facility needs. The committee was tasked with defining needs, reviewing options to solve the needs, and recommending an option to the schoolboard for a possible April bond referendum.
Participation in the meetings was excellent and a number of issues and a recommendations were evaluated. Of the three models that were evaluated, the chosen plan was the least expensive while still addressing all areas of concern. The Facilities Committee determined that it is logical to move forward with the referendum request and show the community both the value and the need. After discussing all the factors between the three options presented, asking questions and giving their opinions, members of the committee agreed that from an educational standpoint that they have selected the option that makes the most sense.
Just Enough.
Using the survey results, the school board was able to address some of the main concerns of the community including addressing only key needs, acting quickly, and addressing space that is for teaching and instruction.
