Kim Horning - Healy Graduate, Loving Pierz Schools for her Own Children
"Kim spends the majority of her time with her students working on giving and service. One project that really sticks out for me is her fundraising effort to take her Spanish Club to Baxter to package meals that fed roughly 4000 needy families."--Principal Karrie Boser

¡Hola! Me llamo Kim Horning (Hi! My name is Kim Horning), and I am the Spanish Teacher at Healy High School. I am also the Spanish Club Advisor and Junior High track coach. You may be more familiar with my maiden name, Zimney, as my sisters, my dad and I have all enjoyed many years at Pierz Schools!
While attending Healy High, I played volleyball, basketball and ran track. I was a cheerleader and danced. Some of my time was spent with the jazz band, pep band, choir, yearbook, drama club and student council. Being in all these activities taught me so much -- how to work with others, how to be a good teammate and employee, it taught me compassion and empathy, and how to set a goal and follow through to accomplish it.
I chose to become a teacher because I love school. I love learning and I want to share that enthusiasm with others.
Like many students, I moved away for college. I worked for many years at various schools, Mayer Lutheran HS, Zimmerman HS and St Michael Albertville Middle School East just to name a few. My decision to return to my hometown to teach was because of the connections we are able to make with students in a smaller school which in turn make it easier to get/keep students engaged in the classroom. It is truly a unique and fun experience getting to work beside many former classmates of mine, as well as having the opportunity to teach many of my classmates’ kids!
I am so proud of our students. They are respectful, giving, and compassionate. Students in Spanish Club give back to the local and global community by raising money and packing food for Kids Against Hunger. We also go Christmas caroling at The Villa and United Friends. Finally, I travel with students to Costa Rica every other summer. Students spend 8-10 days exploring all the natural wonders this beautiful country has while getting to use the Spanish skills they have spent 3 or 4 years practicing in the classroom. Our students have always represented our community and country well when traveling abroad.
My husband, Hans and I along with our daughters, Ella and Fiona, live in Little Falls. We chose to open enroll our daughters (Kindergartener and 2nd grader) to Pioneer Elementary because of the high quality staff, programs and facilities Pierz Schools offer. It is the best of both worlds - small enough to have that close knit community feel yet big enough to offer a wide variety of quality programs, clubs, sports and classes.
When I’m not here at Healy, I am either reading or spending time with family (zoos, museums, libraries, & bookstores are some of our favorite outings).
I feel so fortunate to work with such amazing people, both colleagues and students. I’m blessed each day to learn as much from them as they do from me.
