Pierz Music Department Expounds on Talent, Exceeds Expectations

If you have attended a band, choir, or school musical in the last few years at either the elementary or the high school, you’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the advanced talents of the staff and students that comprise the Pierz Music Department.
This week, Pioneer Elementary showcased their annual Christmas Program to the delight of their friends and family. Last week, middle school choir and band students impressed audiences with their technical skills and abilities--even more impactful is knowing that these students have only been in band and choir for a couple years or less. Next week, senior high students will expertly perform their Holiday Concert, inspiring all ages from our community.
The students and staff at Pierz Schools are supported by parents and community members who truly care for the well-being and futures of their children.
What makes the Pierz Music Department so successful? It’s an ideal mix of student passion, staff passion and parent and community support. Band Director Mr. Joel Pohland knows the value of music for our students:
“Students involved in band and choir love to share what they have learned for our community and for themselves. They love playing, They love making music with one another. They love coming to class and learning how to perform at a high level and succeed. Music teaches so much that these students can apply to life. They learn how to problem solve, how to overcome adversity, how to show emotion, how to be a team player, how to work on their own, and so much more. Music is a language and one that can be universal for our world. Music is all around us and our students want that as part of their life. This is our musical future. Our students will be the ones on the stages, attending (and performing in) concerts, and supporting future music programs.”
But don’t take a teacher’s word for it. Just ask some of our seniors. From Mariah Olesch, “You learn to work with people a lot better and you grow with these people who are all working toward the same goal. When you get to the concert, it’s satisfying to see how your work has paid off.” Will Reed added, “It builds my focus. In most subjects, you don’t combine all the senses the way you do in music. I love that aspect of it so the time spent is well worth it.”
Mrs. Diane Hauan has been honing the singing skills of Pierz students for years and expresses this dedication builds not only great singers, but great people. “The students that are involved in choir and band take little black dots on a piece of paper and create something beautiful. It takes a lot of time and dedication from the students to master the difficulty of the music, but they crave that challenge. The students strive for excellence and it shows. Pierz is so fortunate to be able to listen to the talent that these students share. Take it from Mrs. Hauan: “Come and hear them in their concerts, musicals or programs. You won’t be disappointed!”
The high school Holiday Concert is Monday, December 16 at 7pm in the Middle School gym. All are welcomed and encouraged to come and enjoy the sounds of the season by this talented group!
