I'm Steve Drake, and I'm a Special Education teacher and the coordinator of the Pierz Alternative Program here in the high school. I live in Sartell with my wife, daughter, and son, and I have been living in Minnesota for 18 years ... I've spent most of my life in Wisconsin. Yes, I'm a "Cheese Head" and an avid (not rabid) Packer Fan. I've been teaching for 18 years, and I absolutely love it ... well, most of the time! This is my 13th year teaching in Pierz!! But, before becoming a teacher, I did quite a few different things from opening a restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin to driving tour buses in Alaska. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, fishing, bicycling, disc golf, and playing hockey (with the Buckman Hockey Association!!)..
As a teacher, I work primarily with students on IEP's (Individual Education Plans) grades 10-12 in the capacity of supporting them in their mainstream classes and providing individualized instruction when necessary. Additionally, I devote a great deal of time to helping my "upper classmen" plan and prepare for life after high school during Transition Skills and Post Secondary Transition Preparation classes. This is perhaps the most challenging and rewarding part of my job. I thoroughly enjoy working with these "young adults"!
Most of my students are scheduled with me at different times of the day where they might receive individualized instruction, or they can receive "one on one" help during a Supported Study Hall. I also coordinate the afterschool Pierz Alternative Program (P.A.P.) which allows eligible students the opportunity to make up academic credits. *Please refer to the P.A.P. link on the school's web page for more information.
Attendance is of the utmost importance for all Pierz students. Non attendance (to one of my scheduled classes) typically means missing out on the opportunity to receive individualized instruction or assistance with assignments. For students enrolled for credit in my classes, excused non-attendance results in a daily point total of "4" for that day with no chance to improve that score, as there is no "make-up" work for a "Supported Study" or a "Transition Prep" class. For those striving for the A or B honor roll, Study Skills class can be a great way to bolster grade point average.
